Former India wicketkeeper and RCB player Parthiv Patel has spoken out about the reasons for Royal Challengers Bangalore's (RCB) failure to win the Indian Premier League (IPL), despite having some of the greatest names in T20 cricket. Speaking on the Cyrus Says podcast, Patel expressed his honest thoughts on why the franchise has consistently failed to win any titles.
Throughout his four-year career at RCB, Patel noticed an ongoing issue with the team: the squad's emphasis on individual brilliance rather than functioning as a cohesive unit. The franchise's reliance on great players such as Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle has proven to be a double-edged sword. While these individuals contributed tremendous talent and flashes of brilliance, the general team culture appeared to suffer.
"I played for RCB, I've been there for 4 years. The team is always about individuals, it's not about the team. And then everyone will come out of that team will say that," Patel remarked.
Patel further emphasised the special treatment given to specific individuals, further upsetting the relationships among teammates.
"Because it's all about Virat Kohli, AB de Villiers, and Chris Gayle when I was in the team. So they were given the kind of special preference always, so there the team culture was not there. You can see clearly when they are playing, and that is the reason why they haven't won the trophies. That's the fact," he added.
RCB has reached three times in IPL finals but RCB continues to chase their elusive first IPL title.
