Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan are set to head back to India after Team India's last group-stage match against Canada in Florida on June 15. The two players that travelled to Florida with the squad will not return to the West Indies for the Super 8 stage of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Sources from Cricbuzz indicate that Gill and Avesh’s presence with the squad was intended solely for the US leg, with the possibility of their return subject to any unforeseen injuries. Their inclusion as travelling reserves stems from the logistical challenges of the BCCI promptly sending replacements from India to the US or the Caribbean in the event of a player injury.
Team India has already secured their place in the Super 8s, thanks to a series of impressive victories. They began their T20 World Cup campaign with an eight-wicket win over Ireland, followed by a thrilling six-run triumph over arch-rivals Pakistan. In their third match, India defeated the USA by seven wickets, becoming the first team from Group A to qualify for the Super 8s.
