Delhi Capitals (DC) are set to bring back a familiar face as they prepare for the next season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). The franchise is reportedly aiming to re-sign Shreyas Iyer, their former captain, who last played for them in IPL 2021. According to a PTI report, the Capitals have not only expressed interest in acquiring Iyer but have also promised him the captaincy role for the 2025 season.
Shreyas Iyer, who led Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to their third IPL title in the 2024 season, is expected to be one of the most sought-after players in the upcoming auction. Delhi Capitals, controlled by the GMR group for the next two years, are keen to reunite with their former captain, who guided them to the IPL finals in 2020.
Iyer has proven to be a dependable leader and consistent performer with the bat. During his IPL career, he has accumulated 3,127 runs in 115 innings, boasting an impressive average of over 32 and a strike rate exceeding 125. His contributions include 21 half-centuries, with a best score of an unbeaten 58.
In the 2024 IPL season, Iyer's leadership helped KKR clinch their first title since 2014. KKR won 9 out of 14 group stage matches and remained unbeaten in the playoffs, finishing with a net run rate of +1.428.
With one of the largest auction purses—INR 73 crore—Delhi Capitals are well-positioned to make a significant bid for Iyer. The franchise is expected to face stiff competition from other teams interested in the right-handed batter, but Delhi is determined to bring Iyer back to lead the squad.
