Chandika Hathurusingha, the former coach of Bangladesh, has been reappointed as the head coach of the three formats of the team. The Lankan heavyweight coach is rumored to be in charge of Tests and ODIs like Russell Domingo, but ultimately he will lead the coaching panel in all formats.
Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) president Nazmul Hassan Papon has confirmed that Hathurusingha will be the coach in all three formats. He said, “Chandika Hathurusingha is the head coach of Bangladesh in all three formats.”
Hathurusingha is one of the most successful coaches in Bangladesh cricket. Bangladesh played 21 Tests under him. They won 6 matches, which is the record for the highest number of Test wins under any coach of Bangladesh, lost 11 matches, and drew 4 matches. Under Hathurusingha's coaching, Bangladesh played 51 ODIs and won 25, lost 23 matches. It was mainly during his tenure that Bangladesh reached the ranks of superpowers in ODIs, winning series against teams like India, South Africa, and Pakistan.
In addition, he brought 10 wins in 29 T20s. However, the team's rise during his tenure was evident, which is difficult to understand when looking at the results record.
Steve Rhodes became the coach of Bangladesh after the departure of Hathurusingha. Bangladesh were in great shape before the 2019 ODI World Cup. However, Rhodes lost his role immediately after the World Cup as Bangladesh could not perform as expected in the World Cup.
Russell Domingo joined as the new coach on August 17, 2019, who voluntarily resigned, and the BCB has brought in Hathurusingha again in his vacated seat.
