After nearly two decades, the Afro-Asia Cup, a unique cricket tournament featuring teams from Asia and Africa, is reportedly set to return. According to ESPNCricinfo, the Africa Cricket Association (ACA) is planning to revive the tournament, which was last played in 2007. The Afro-Asia Cup brings together top players from cricketing giants like India and Pakistan, as well as other Asian and African nations, to compete in a series of white-ball matches.

The ACA held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) recently, where a six-person interim committee was appointed to expand competitive opportunities across Africa. One of the main goals discussed during the AGM was approaching the Asia Cricket Council (ACC) to explore possibilities for organizing cross-continental series, including the Afro-Asia Cup.

The Afro-Asia Cup, which has only been held twice before in 2005 and 2007 was a fan favorite in its early years but has not seen a third edition. If the tournament is indeed revived, it could feature stars like Virat Kohli, Babar Azam, Shaheen Afridi, and Jasprit Bumrah playing on the same team, creating a historic moment in the world of cricket.

ACA Interim Chair Tavengwa Mukuhlani confirmed the growing interest in the tournament, stating,

“The Afro-Asia Cup, apart from the cricket, brings the much-needed financial input to the organization, and the appetite is huge from both ends. We have had conversations with our counterparts within the Asia Cricket Council, and obviously our African contingents, they want the Afro-Asia Cup to be revived.”

The Afro-Asia Cup first took place in South Africa in 2005, where Asia XI, led by Inzamam-ul-Haq, competed in a three-match ODI series against Africa XI. The series ended in a 1-1 tie, with one match washed out due to rain. The 2007 edition, held in India, saw Asia XI, captained by Mahela Jayawardene, dominate the series with a 3-0 victory.
