West Indies captain Kragg Brathwaite struck an unbeaten 99-run innings and right-arm pacer Suranga Lakmal claimed 3 wickets for 71 as West Indies and Sri Lanka shared the honours on the opening day of the first Test in North Stand on Monday. West Indies, Sri Lanka on equal footing after day 1

The hosts ended the day on 287/7, with Brathwaite leading the way with 99* off 239 balls – and several others chipping in with useful knocks. Kyle Mayers (49), Alzarri Joseph (29) and Jason Holder (30) all got modest starts after Sri Lanka opted to bowl first, but they could not march on. Brathwaite and Rahkeem Cornwall were unbeaten on 99 and 43 respectively at the close. The visiting bowlers managed to strike whenever a partnership started to flourish, keeping West Indies in check. Lakmal made the first breakthrough when he took the wicket of John Campbell. Then Lakmal again got a wicket as he bowled Nkrumah Bonner for a duck. Brathwaite and Mayers then steadied the innings with a 71-run stand before the latter got out scoring 49 runs. Lakmal claimed the last of his three wickets beautifully, as he got an all-important wicket of Jermaine Balckwood. It ended Brathwaite’s promising 34-run fourth-wicket stand with Blackwood. Jason Holder also left the field after Dhananjaya de Silva restricted him for 30 runs. Joshua Da Silva made just 1 run off 35 balls and fell victim to Dushmantha Chameera. Joseph also returned scoring 29 runs. Then Cornwall gave a worthy company to the captain for the eighth wicket. They put on an inseparable 65-run stand.
