Afghanistan's fast bowler Naveen-ul-Haq had a forgettable outing in the first T20I against Zimbabwe, bowling a 13-ball over that proved costly as Rashid Khan's men went down by four wickets in a thrilling finish at the Harare Sports Club. The 19-run over drastically shifted momentum toward Zimbabwe, who chased down Afghanistan's 145-run target off the final ball, securing their first T20I win against Afghanistan since 2019.

Naveen's nightmare over came at a crucial juncture in the 15th over, with Zimbabwe needing 57 runs from the last six overs. Despite his overall figures of 3/33 from four overs, the Afghan pacer's 13-ball over included one no-ball and four consecutive wides. His struggle to deliver consistent yorkers outside the off stump allowed Zimbabwe to claw back into the game.

Naveen began the over with a wide against Brian Bennett, who then took a single. Sikandar Raza took charge from there, smashing a no-ball for a boundary, followed by four consecutive wides that further drained Afghanistan’s momentum. Raza continued his assault, hitting another boundary on the free hit, before being dismissed by Naveen on the third legitimate ball. However, Naveen’s control issues persisted as he conceded more wides and singles, reducing Zimbabwe's target to 38 runs off 30 balls.

Although Naveen struck again in the penultimate over by dismissing Wesley Madhevere, Zimbabwe's lower order held their nerves. Ryan Burl and Bennett guided Zimbabwe to a nail-biting victory, giving them a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. This win was a significant milestone for Zimbabwe, marking their first T20I victory over Afghanistan in five years.
