Pakistan former captain Babar Azam displayed his trademark skill once again in the second ODI against South Africa at Newlands, Cape Town, on December 19. After a string of inconsistent performances, Babar finally seemed to be in solid form, but his hopes for a much-anticipated century were cut short by South African pacer Andile Phehlukwayo, with Aiden Markram playing a key role in his dismissal.

The breakthrough came on the last ball of the 33rd over. Phehlukwayo bowled a half-tracker, and Babar attempted a pull shot, aiming to place the ball to the boundary. However, he misjudged the placement, and the ball flew straight into the hands of Aiden Markram at square leg, who held on to a superb catch, leaving the Pakistani captain stunned. Babar was sent back to the pavilion for a well-fought 73 off 95 balls, a performance that held the innings together until that point.

After Babar's departure, Pakistan looked to capitalize on the foundation he and Rizwan had built. Kamran Ghulam, a rising star in Pakistan cricket, played a blistering knock towards the end of the innings. His aggressive batting saw him score an unbeaten 63 off just 32 balls, injecting much-needed momentum into Pakistan's innings and pushing the team's total to an imposing 329 runs.
