Winning a Man of the Match award by a member of the losing side is “not very common”. But this is exactly what happened with Zimbabwe's Malcolm Waller in the first T20I match against Bangladesh when he was declared the Man of the Match despite being in the losing side. It was his marauding 31-ball 68 innings that won him the award the other day.
And once again on Sunday in the second T20I of the match, while chasing a challenging target of 136, Waller once again anchored the Zimbabwe innings with his rapidfire 40 to play a big role to help his team canter to victory.
Albeit it was the heroics of Neville Madziva eventually, Waller was the man to reconstruct the base of Zimbabwe innings after one point they were tottering at 5 for 39. Many thought the knock Waller played the other day was a mere fluke. But Waller silenced his critics with a rare consistency and smashed three sixes and a couple of boundaries before becoming a catch of Sabbir Rahman off the bowling of Nasir Hossain.
Waller might have been a bit disappointed with the fact that he was dismissed right at the moment his team needed him the most. But at the same time he must be very happy that his team ultimately won the thrilling match riding on the all-round brilliance of Madiziva and as a result he himself was the man to be declared the Man of the Series. This is certainly a great achievement for the Zimbabwe batsman to win such an award, that too by playing a series against Bangladesh, who have been one of the most successful limited-overs sides of the year.
