Samit Rohit Patel (born November 30, 1984) is an English cricketer. A right-handed batsman and slow left-armed bowler, he plays first-class cricket for Nottinghamshire County Cricket Club. Early and Personal Life

Samit Patel was born in Leicester on November 30, 1984 to Rohit and Sejal. His parents are from Bhavnagar, Gujarat, India, where he has relatives. Patel's brother Akhil (born 1990) also played for Nottinghamshire and made his debut in 2009. Patel was educated at Eastwood Comprehensive School but later studied at Worksop College in north Nottinghamshire where he was a member of the 1st XI cricket team for five seasons.

During his time at college Patel represented England at the under 15, under 17 and under 19 levels. He helped them win victories over schools like Repton, Manchester Grammar School and Shrewsbury School and clubs like Marylebone Cricket Club.

Domestic and T20 Career

Since making his debut for Nottinghamshire aged 16, Patel has been part of the team, both in top-flight and List A games. He was the only man in the history of the English Twenty20 competition to win a double wicket maid when Nottinghamshire played Derbyshire at New Road, Worcester in 2006. He hit 887 runs in the 2007 county championship, including four centuries, he also took 10 wickets and topped the county's bowling averages.

In the 2008 season, Patel made a steady start to Nottinghamshire's top-flight campaign, scoring a century against Durham and three and a half centuries. Nottinghamshire finished second to Durham in the 2009 County Championship; From 15 games, Patel averaged 712 runs (fourth most for the club that year) with an average of 30.95 and a highest score of 95. He also took 32 wickets at an average of 47.84, with two five-wicket trains.

In January 2010, Patel signed a three-year deal with Nottinghamshire. He partially funded a trip to Australia's Darren Lehmann Cricket Academy, where he spent February and March, part of which was aimed at improving his fitness.

When Nottinghamshire won the County Championship in 2010, Patel contributed fewer runs: 641 from 16 games for an average of 26.70, making him the club's sixth-highest run scorer in that year's competition. His lone century in the competition, an inning of 104 balls from 185, ended in a loss to Somerset in July.

In July 2019 he was selected to play for the Rotterdam Rhinos in the inaugural edition of the Euro T20 Slam cricket tournament. However, the following month the tournament was cancelled.

International Career

Patel made his debut for England's senior one-day side on 18 August 2008 in a match against Scotland. His first wicket was that of Neil McCallum and he finished with counts of 1/22 from seven overs; he also took a catch and ran off Scotland captain Ryan Watson.

Patel remained part of England's ODI team for the series against South Africa later that summer, taking the remarkable wicket from  Gibbs in the first ODI of the series at Headingley. He posted numbers of 5/41 and hit 31 runs from 49 balls in the third ODI to win the Man of the Match award as England won the series. In September 2008 it was announced that Patel and six other players - the group consisting mainly of ODI specialists - would be awarded progressive contracts with the England Cricket Board (ECB).

Patel played against India in the first ODI. India scored 387 points with Patel scoring numbers 2-78. He scored a run a ball 28 in response, but England lost by 158 runs. India also won the second ODI, with Patel taking 0-37 and making with the bat. Patel scored 26 in the third ODI as England ejected for 240 and again failed to make an impact with the ball. Patel took his third wicket of the series in the next match, but England lost again, this time by 19 runs by the DL method, falling 4–0 in the series. England lost the last game of the series, with Patel going unneeded with the racquet and again failing to score with the ball.

Patel was called up to the England squad that triumphed on home soil against India. He played in the first two games of the series, scoring numbers 1–42 in the first game, which had no result due to rain. In the second game, England won by seven wickets, with Patel overstating just one for 11 runs. He returned in the fifth match of the series and although he didn't have to bat, he took numbers from 0 to 55 as England won by six wickets.

In October, England toured India for five ODIs and a T20I. Although England lost the series 5–0, Patel hit 160 runs and took four wickets on a 45.50 average. In the first ODI, he took 1-49 and made 16 with the bat. In the second match he made 42 but took no wickets as England lost eight wickets. During the third ODI, Patel scored his first half-century, 70 from 43 balls, surpassing his previous highest format score of 42. In the fourth ODI, he made very little impression with bat or ball as England suffered another defeat suffered while taking three wickets and making 18 with the racquet in the last game of the series.

Patel had been on the provisional list for the 2012 Indian Premier League player auction but chose to withdraw to concentrate on English cricket as taking part would have meant missing up to seven County Championship games.

The new year began with Patel's inclusion in the England Lions squad to tour Sri Lanka for a one-day series in late January and early February 2012. Patel played in all five games and had 128 carries with a maximum scoring of 50 and was the leading wicket-taker in the series with 12 wickets by each side. When the ODI squad against Pakistan was announced in February, Patel was there.

In the first ODI he went unbeaten 17 and went 3-26 as England won by 130 runs. England won the next game by 20 runs, with Patel scoring numbers 2–51. Patel didn't need to bat in the third game as England recorded a nine-wicket win. England won the fourth game by nine wickets, although Patel did not save a wicket. During the series, which England won 4-0, Patel was given an incremental contract by the ECB.

England had suffered a 3-0 defeat by Pakistan in the Tests and when they toured Sri Lanka in March, struggling batsman Eoin Morgan was dropped and Patel was included in the Test squad for the first time. Patel played Sri Lanka in both Tests, batting at No. 7.

England lost the first Test by 75 runs, with Patel winning 2–27 in Sri Lanka's first innings, despite not picking up a wicket in the second. He scored two and nine points and was dismissed by a spin bowler each time.

In the second match, which England won by 8 wickets, he took numbers from 0 to 32 in Sri Lanka's first innings before making 29 with the bat. He took a wicket in the second innings to help bring England under control and they went on to win the match. Patel started the English season in April with a string of low scores, amassing 33 runs from his first four innings.

T20 World Cup 2012

Patel made his debut at the tournament against Afghanistan and finished on exceptional numbers, winning 2-6 from three overs as England won by 116 runs. He also played against the West Indies but was more expensive and finished 0–38 with England losing by 15 runs. He played in England's last game of the tournament against Sri Lanka when he recorded the highest score of 67 when England reached 150, 19 runs off Sri Lanka's total. England failed to qualify for the semifinals.

2012/13 India

Patel played India in the first Test but struggled with bat and ball. After taking 1/96 in the first innings, he did not take a wicket in the second innings and scored just ten runs in the match as England lost by nine wickets. With six strokes, he scored 26 in England's first innings of the second Test but did not take a wicket as England won by ten wickets. In the third Test, Patel didn't roll in India's first innings but scored 33 in England's response as they built a large lead. He threw just one over in the second inning as England won by eight wickets.

In the first ODI, Patel went 44 unbeaten as England won by nine runs. He went 30 unbeaten in the next game but England were knocked out with 158 and lost the game. Patel was dismissed for a duck in the next game as England suffered a seven-wicket defeat. He played only a limited role in the next game, scoring just one goal and bowling just three overs as England lost by five wickets. England won the last game of the series after scoring 226 points in the first innings. Patel took numbers from 1 to 46 in India's answer as England won by seven wickets.

Patel played against New Zealand in both of their T20 internationals. England won by 40 runs with Patel taking 0-17. He retained his spot for the next match but was expensive, bowling two overs for 20 runs. He was run out with the bat for six and New Zealand won by 55 runs.

2015 Pakistan

After a three-year absence from England's Test squad, Patel was called up for England's series against Pakistan in October 2015 after Zafar Ansari was ruled out with a hand injury.[44] He played in the third Test, taking numbers from 2 to 85 in Pakistan's first innings before making 42 with the bat. He took 1-79 in Pakistan's second innings but was then dismissed for a duck as England lost by 127 runs.
