The International Cricket Council just finished its yearly session in Sri Lanka. During July 19-22, a wide range of subjects were covered, with a particular emphasis on expanding women's cricket. The selection of a new ICC chairman was one item that did not appear on the schedule. President Nazmul Hasan of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) recently told the press that Dhaka will host the next International Cricket Council (ICC) board meeting, which is likely to coincide with the next election.
“It has been confirmed that the next ICC board meeting will be in Dhaka. Possibly, the election would take place here. I think there will be an election as the current chairman will have the last board meeting. We are expected to give our election mandate by this time,” Nazmul told reporters on July 28.
According to Papon, the ICC was worried about the country's instability, but his participation at the most recent board meeting reassured the governing body that Bangladesh will proceed with preparations to host the Women's T20 World Cup.
Nizamuddin Chowdhury, chief executive of the BCB, and Shafiul Alam Chowdhury Nadel, chairperson of the BCB women's section, have previously expressed similar views.
Members of the International Cricket Council were reportedly keeping an eye on events unfolding in Bangladesh, where the government has been enforcing an emergency order to rein in the state's affairs since last week in response to widespread street protests.
After Papon came at the ICC meeting in Sri Lanka, he did not completely refute it, but he did insist that the representatives of different countries were persuaded that the event can be hosted as scheduled. "When I went there, the situation of the country was very bad and there was no communication with Bangladesh from outside and the news they were getting [was something] they were quite afraid [of].But after seeing me they said at least they are convinced that everything is alright in the country,” Nazmul also added.
"After that there was no discussion about it and all they wanted to know was what had happened. For us the important thing is the Women's World Cup that we will host here," he concluded.
As of right now, the ICC chair is Greg Barclay. Another two-year term for Barclay as chairman of the ICC, which began in November 2022 and ends later this year, was unanimously elected.
Previous news indicated that Jay Shah, secretary of the BCCI, is vying for the position of ICC chairman. If Shah ran for the office, he would supposedly have no problem winning.
