Hatige Don Rumesh Lahiru Thirimanne, known as Lahiru Thirimanne (born on August 9, 1989) is a Sri Lankan International Cricketer and a former ODI captain. He is a left-handed opening hitter and a right-handed medium-paced bowler. He was also vice-captain of the Sri Lanka One Day International team when he was kicked out of the team after poor performances.

Early Career

Thirimanne started his cricket career at S.Thomas' College, Bandarawela, playing U11 cricket. His first coach was Sujeewa Gunarathne. He first studied at S.Thomas' College Bandarawela when his father, who was employed in the surveying department, was transferred. After passing the 5th grade scholarship exam, Lahiru joined Prince of Wales College, Moratuwa, playing in the under-13, 15, 17 and 19 teams.

Domestic Career

In March 2018, he was named to Colombo's roster for the 2017–18 Super Four Provincial Tournament. He was the leading run scorer for Colombo during the tournament, with 198 runs in three games.

The following month, he was also named to Colombo's squad for the 2018 Super Provincial One Day Tournament. In August 2018, he was called up to Kandy's squad for the 2018 SLC T20 League. In March 2019, he was named to Galle's roster for the 2019 Super Provincial One Day Tournament. In August 2021 he was signed by Australia's Mulgrave Cricket Club ahead of the 2021/22 season.

International Career

In early 2010 he made his debut with One Day International (ODI).] He made his Test debut against England in the Rose Bowl in June 2011, coming in for injured Tillakaratne Dilshan. In his first Test innings, he was dismissed for 10 runs caught behind bowling by James Anderson.

Thirimanne scored his first ODI century against Australia at the Adelaide Oval during the second ODI of the 2012–13 Commonwealth Bank Series. It's also his first A-list century. Thirimann achieved a deserved century by putting Xavier Doherty behind the point for the winning runs.

Lahiru Thirimanne's century is just a Sri Lankan batsman's fifth in a chase against Australia (runner-up in Adelaide). Aravinda de Silva has scored in car chases for two centuries. Also the 137 run tally between Thirimanne and Tillakaratne Dilshan is the second highest second wicket partnership for Sri Lanka against Australia. During the 1st Test in Galle on March 8, 2013, during Bangladesh's tour of Sri Lanka, Thirimanne scored his first Test century. His 155 unbeaten run helped set up a big total for Sri Lanka. Thirimanne was alert. On 99, he commissioned Elias Sunny and picked up two runs to seal his landmark. Thirimanne was strong offside against the sailors. A single on the cover pushed him past 150. He also formed a 203-run partnership with Dinesh Chandimal. The 203 run tally between Chandimal and Thirimanne is the third highest fifth wicket partnership for Sri Lanka in Tests against Bangladesh. Finally the game was drawn.

During the 2014 Asian Cup in Bangladesh, he opened batting with Kusal Perera due to Tillakaratne Dilshan's injury, who was not included in the series. He hit two great hundreds against Pakistan, where he ended up being the tournament's top run scorer at 2 centuries with a 55.80 average. Finally, Sri Lanka became champions for the fifth time in Asian Cup history. Thirimanne was voted Man of the Match of Final and also Player of the Series.

During the 2015 ICC Cricket World Cup, Thirimanne started opening batting with Tillakaratne Dilshan. Before the tournament, the opening Sri Lankan pair struggled to catch up but eventually it was sealed between Thirimanne and Dilshan. On 1 March 2015 he scored his 4th ODI century against England where Sri Lanka successfully pursued 309 runs. He added 212* runs for the second wicket partnership with Kumar Sangakkara to win the match. This remains the highest 2nd wicket partnership for Sri Lanka in ODI cricket. He was undefeated 139 in the match.

In April 2019 he was called up to the Sri Lanka squad for the 2019 Cricket World Cup. On 4 June 2019, in Sri Lanka's game against Afghanistan, Thirimanne scored his 3,000. Run in ODI cricket.

In the first Test match against New Zealand in August 2019, Thirimanne scored a half-century to win a match in the fourth innings to complete a goal of 267. This is the first time a team has successfully pursued a fourth-innings goal in excess of 100, even at Galle Stadium. New Zealand announced 267 runs in their second innings to win the match, where Thirimanne, along with skipper Dimuth Karunaratne, gave a strong opening partnership of 161 runs. This stand is only the second instance that fourth innings of a Test game in Asia have surpassed 150 run opening partnerships.

In April 2021, during the first Test match against Bangladesh, Thirimanne scored his 10th Test half-century and formed a century-opening partnership with Dimuth Karunaratne. He is the second-highest test run scorer in 2021, behind only Joe Root.

During the second test match, Thirimanne and Dimuth Karunaratne added 209, Sri Lanka's first 200-plus opening tally since 2011 and the first in the country in 21 years. The partnership, which also marks the pair's third consecutive century, ended when Karunaratne was caught just after tea by Bangladesh debutant Shoriful Islam. In the process, Thirimanne scored 2000 Test runs and reached his third Test century, his second century in 2021. He scored 140 runs in the match in which Sri Lanka hit a huge first inning for a total of 493. Later, Sri Lanka won the match by 202 runs and won the series.

Captaincy

Thirimanne captained the Sri Lankan cricket team at the 2014 Asian Games where Sri Lanka won the gold medal by beating Afghanistan in the final.

He captained Sri Lanka against New Zealand due to a minor injury suffered by captain Angelo Mathews. However, his first game as captain did not go well as they lost the game by 108 runs.

Rise to Glory

A cultured middle-order batsman, Thirimanne is best known for his performance in first-class cricket for Ragama, scoring 709 runs in eight games he played in the 2010 season.

This performance helped him earn an ODI cap and eventually became the mainstay of Sri Lanka's batting lineup.
