Washington Freedom thrashed San Francisco Unicorns in the final of Major League Cricket 2024 on Monday (29th July). Super Smith smashed a fantastic 88, and Mad Maxwell blasted 40 off 22 to help his side set a target of 208. In reply, Merco Jansen and Rachin Ravindra made merry and shared 3 wickets apiece to help Washington lift the trophy for the very first time.

Being asked to bat first, Washington Freedom lost Travis Head to Pat Cummins earlier on. Captain Steve Smith and Andries Gous had a stand before Gous and Rachin Ravindra went without making any big contributions. Though Smith was on fire and the partnership with his countryman Glenn Maxwell took the game away from San Francisco Unicorns. Drysdale conceded 28 runs in one over as both the batters went berserk.

Smith finished his innings on 88 off only 52 deliveries, he blasted 7 boundaries and 6 massive sixes. Maxwell scored a crucial 40 off 22 balls and Washington Freedom posted a gigantic 207 on the board.

In reply, the San Francisco Unicorns were never really into the chase, as they lost Jake Fraser-McGurk in the third over. Fin Allen, who scored a blasting century in the qualifier, was knocked over earlier on by Merco Jansen to leave their side reeling at 30/3. Sherfane Rutherford and Josh Inglis also gone early, ending any hopes for the Unicorns.

San Francisco Unicorns were bowled out for 111 inside 16 overs and lost the final by 96 runs.

Rachin Ravindra cleaned up the tail and returned figures with 3/23. While Steve Smith was adjusted as the player of the match for his resounding 88 off only 52 balls.
