Sunil Gavaskar Criticizes Players Leaving IPL Early for National Duty

Sunil Gavaskar, a former Indian cricketer, isn't happy with players who are leaving the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 before it ends to join their national teams. He wrote about it in his column for Mid Day, explaining why he thinks it's not fair.

Gavaskar understands that playing for country is important, but he also thinks players should respect their contracts with IPL teams. IPL teams pay a lot of money to have players for the whole season, so leaving early means they're not fulfilling their commitments.

Gavaskar believes that early withdrawals of players should have a penalty, such as money deducted away from their salaries. In addition, he questions why, when no other league does so, the BCCI pays commissions to other cricket boards during every IPL season.

The recent announcement by the England Cricket Board (ECB) adds fuel to the debate. They said their players in the IPL need to come back for a series against Pakistan. This raises questions about how players balance their national and IPL commitments.

"I am all for players choosing country before anything else but having assured various franchises about their availability for the full season, if they pull out now, it will be letting down the franchises which probably pay them more money in one IPL season which they don’t earn in a few seasons with their country," Gavaskar wrote in his column for Mid-day.

“The franchises should not only be allowed to deduct a substantial amount from the fee that the player was bought for, but also not give the Board, to which the player belongs, the stated 10 per cent commission of the fee that each player gets," he added.
