Bangladesh captain Najmul Hossain Shanto says there is nothing to worry about the batters. Shanto talks about this in the post-match presentation after their win against Sri Lanka in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Bangladesh beat Sri Lanka by 2 wickets in a thriller on Saturday (8th June) at Grand Prairie Stadium, Dallas. Bangladesh pacers - Taskin Ahmed and Mustafizur Rahman bowled superbly with lot of variations at the start of the innings and during the death overs as well. While Rishad Hossain provided crucial breakthroughs in the middle over as he picked up Charith Asalanka and Wanindu Hasaranga in consecutive deliveries to leave Sri Lanka stutter. In the end, Sri Lanka scored 124 runs for 9 wickets in 20 overs.
In reply, Sri Lanka also bowled well on a slow pitch. But Towhid Hridoy's blitzkrieg 40 off 20 deliveries and a gutsy knock of 36 from 38 balls from Litton Das helped Bangladesh chase down the total. Though Bangladesh lost wickets in regular intervals, Mahmudullah Riyad kept his nerve cool in the end and picked up the win for Bangladesh. However, Shanto is not much worried about the batters.
“I don't think there is much reason to worry. It was a very tensed match. At the end of the day we wanted to win. If we think about the result, we got 2 points. All the batters know that we may not have batted well. Not everyone will play well every day. Hridoy played a very good innings. Riyad Bhai finished the game, Litton made a good start long after. I hope he will win the game for us when he gets set at the crease. I don't expect all seven batters in the team to play well,” Shanto said.
The openers of Bangladesh- Tanzid Hasan Tamim (3 runs off 6 balls) and Soumya Sarkar (0 runs off 2 balls) flopped again in the match. But Shanto hopes they will do well in the next match against South Africa. “No, as I said earlier, the game is not only about the openers. The 7-8 batters who play, all of us are responsible. As a captain, I want whoever is set to finish the game. I hope the openers will make a good start and finish the game in the next match. That's what I hope and I'm very hopeful that everyone will do well,” Shanto added.
