After yet another strong start with the bat in hand, the India vice-captain succumbed to the flighted delivery from Lyon, and failed to suppress the urge to clear the boundary.
Former cricketers and pundits were quick to come down hard on Rohit, with Sunil Gavaskar terming it "Unbelievable, irresponsible, totally unnecessary".
"Why? Why? Why? That's an unbelievable shot. That's an irresponsible shot. There is a fielder there at long on, there is a fielder there at deep square leg," said Gavaskar
"You've just hit a boundary a couple of deliveries earlier, why would you play that shot? You're a senior player, there's no excuse, absolutely no excuse for this shot. An unnecessary wicket, an unnecessary wicket, gifted away. Totally unnecessary," he added.
Sanjay Manjrekar also slammed Sharma's approach to batting, calling his way of getting out "inexcusable".
"Considering the experience missing in the team, that shot from an experienced Rohit Sharma was inexcusable," he wrote on Twitter.
However, Sharma does not believe there was any mistake from his side, as he thinks it was important in this slow-scoring series for the batsmen to take the initiative and put the pressure back on the bowlers/
"I was actually trying to pierce the long-on and that deep square-leg fielder [as he did in Sydney too, successfully], but it didn't connect the way I would have loved to," Sharma claimed.
"Pretty simple. It was something I won't regret. It is something I like to do. I like to put the pressure on the bowler once I am in, and that is my role in the team. To make sure I keep putting that pressure on the bowlers because we have seen throughout the series how run-scoring has been difficult for both the teams."
India were 62 for two at stumps, and still 307 runs behind Australia's huge first innings collection of 369. Had Sharma remained at the crease and resumed third day's play, India would have been in a much stronger position in the match which they must win to claim the series.
