Indian skipper Rohit Sharma has made headlines once more, advancing to No. 2 in the ICC ODI rankings after a standout performance in the recently finished three-match series against Sri Lanka. Despite India's 2-0 series loss, Rohit's individual brilliance shined through, solidifying his place among the world's best ODI batsmen.

Rohit Sharma's climb in the rankings follows his historic performance of leading India to their second T20 World Cup win in 2024, in which he scored the second-most runs. Rohit carried that form into the ODI series against Sri Lanka, when he scored 157 runs, becoming the series' leading run-scorer. His aggressive attitude at the top of the order, which he has used in all formats since 2023, has shown to be quite beneficial for both him and the Indian team.

This consistent run of form has not only bolstered India's batting lineup but also propelled Rohit Sharma up the ICC ODI rankings. He has overtaken teammate Shubman Gill to claim the No. 2 spot, with only Pakistan’s Babar Azam ahead of him. Rohit is now the highest-ranked Indian batter in both ODIs and Tests.

On the Sri Lankan side, Pathum Nissanka’s consistent performances against India earned him a significant rise in the rankings. He climbed to the 8th spot with 708 rating points. Additionally, Sri Lanka's Kusal Mendis and Avishka Fernando also saw improvements in their rankings. Mendis moved up five places to equal 39th, while Fernando jumped 20 spots to 68th.
