Rohit Sharma etched his name in cricketing history by leading India to their ICC Champions Trophy 2025 triumph making him only the second Indian captain after MS Dhoni, to win multiple ICC titles. Amid discussions surrounding Rohit's potential retirement former Australian National Cricket Team captain Ricky Ponting offered his thoughts, suggesting that the Indian skipper is eyeing the ICC World Cup 2027.

On the latest episode of The ICC Review Ponting shared his views on Rohit's future plans emphasizing that his performance in the Champions Trophy final demonstrated his continued value to the Indian team. Ponting stated,
"When you start getting to that point of your career, everyone's waiting for you to retire. And I don't know why, when you can still play as well as he's played."
The Australian legend believes Rohit's statement about not retiring signifies that he is determined to push forward with a clear goal. "I think he was just trying to put those questions to bed once and for all, saying ‘no, I'm still playing well enough. I love playing in this team. I love leading this team.’ And I think, the fact that he said that, to me, it means that he must have that goal in mind of playing in the next (50-over) World Cup (in 2027)," Ponting added.
Ponting further noted that Rohit might be driven by a desire to avenge India's 2023 World Cup loss, where he led the side as captain. "I think probably the fact that they lost the last one and he was captain, that might be the thing that's playing on the back of his mind," he remarked.
Ponting concluded by saying that Rohit’s recent performance in the Champions Trophy final showed that his time at the top isn’t over just yet: "When you see him play like he played in the Champions Trophy final, you wouldn't say that his time is up."
