The first match of the two-match Test series between Australia and West Indies has started in Adelaide. Matt Renshaw is in the squad even though he is not in the XI for this match. However, Renshaw will be given leave on the third day of the match to play the Big Bash League (BBL).  

Brisbane Heat will play against Sydney Sixers in the Big Bash qualifiers. This match will be organized on January 19 in Carrara. Renshaw has been kept as the only alternate batter in Australia's 13-member squad. Renshaw will be released to play in the Big Bash on match day i.e. the third day of the Test match. As a result, there will be no substitute batter in Australia’s squad for 24 hours. Australia will not have the option to drop a concussion sub if a batter gets injured on the third day of the Test.

Cricket Australia (CA) confirmed Renshaw's clearance to play the Big Bash in a press release. However, after playing the Big Bash match, Renshaw will have to fly to Adelaide again. 

Australia needed a concussion sub twice in Tests in the past. Marnus Labuschagne once came on as a concussion sub in place of Steve Smith in the 2019 Ashes at Lord's. It was the first concussion sub-incident in Test history. Besides, Matt Renshaw came down as David Warner's concussion sub in the Delhi Test against India last year. Australia has not yet needed a concussion sub in Test cricket at home.
