Former South African spinner Robin Peterson has been appointed MI Cape Town head coach for SA20 2024. Former Sri Lanka fast bowler Lasith Malinga has joined the franchise as bowling coach.
The South African was previously linked to the MI Cape Town team as general manager during the inaugural SA20 season, which saw them finish at the bottom of the table. He will now take over the position of head coach, succeeding Simon Katich.
Lasith Malinga will take over as bowling coach for MI Cape Town from former New Zealand all-rounder Jacob Oram. Notably, the pacer recently served as the bowling coach for MI New York, who secured their maiden Major League Cricket (MLC) title.
Hashim Amla remains MICT's batting coach for the 2024 SA20. Rashid Khan, who was captain last season, Kagiso Rabada, Sam Curran and Dewald Brevis have been retained by the team ahead of the auction scheduled for September 27 in Johannesburg.
The Cape Town-based franchise underperformed in the first edition of franchise cricket in South Africa. MICT finished at the bottom of the points table with three wins in 10 games despite having overwhelming T20 superstars in their squad.
The international stars, including Rashid Khan, delivered disappointing performances. Rassie van der Dussen was the only player in the top 10 run-getters, scoring 243 runs at a strike rate of just 122.11. Kagiso Rabada finished at number 12 on the bowling charts with 11 wickets.
