Former Australian skipper Ian Chappell reserved the highest respect for Australian skipper Pat Cummins for the way he led the team from the vanguard in the recently concluded ICC Men's ODI World Cup 2023. Despite losing the first two games of the group stage, Australian players sorted out their woes before it's too late.

This is also Australia's sixth title in the ICC Cricket World Cup history, the most by a team in the history of the tournament. Speaking highly of Cummins, Ian Chappell added that Cummins has gone beyond being a good captain. 

Australia won the intriguing final by six wickets at Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Travis Head played a match-winning inning in the final. He was adjudged the Man of the Match for his stellar century. Virat Kohli who scored 711 runs was named the Man of the Tournament. 

"I think he's gone beyond being a good captain, he's a very good captain. I probably thought he would be a good captain, now I think he's better than that, that's probably the surprise. If you don't develop as a captain you don't last very long. I thought right from the start that he'd be a good captain and it's turned out he's probably been better than I thought he'd be. I think he's been terrific," Ian Chappell told World Wide Sports.

Furthermore, the former Australian echoed that Cummins is the most inspirational leader in the side and credited him for turning things around after the first two defeats in World Cup 2023. 

"I've never had a coach, I don't believe in them. The fact the team had so much belief in itself, I think that's attributed to Pat Cummins, they had belief in him as a bowler, they also had belief in his captaincy. I think Pat's the most inspirational player in that Australian side, and has been for a number of years, I think that inspiration has seeped through to the team so I tend to think that the captain and the players are the ones that deserve the most credit," he further added.
