Australian off spinner Nathan Lyon has signed with Lancashire for the 2024 season. The 36-year-old will be available for all competitions throughout the summer.
Experienced Australian spinner Nathan Lyon was recently announced as the latest addition to Lancashire Cricket Club's squad. Lyon will be in the squad for the 2024 season and it could be interesting to see how the 36-year-old performs for the club.
Lyon has some County Championship experience, having played for Worcestershire in the 2017 season, helping the side win the Division Two title.
Lyon, who recently returned to play after suffering a serious calf tear in the second Test against England in June and limited his Ashes involvement, announced last month that the Lancashire deal was on the table.
He will arrive before the start of the LV= Insurance County Championship in April, where he will team up with long-time Ashes rival James Anderson, and is expected to be available in all formats.
“I love playing cricket in England. I’m keen to continue learning, continue to improve my game and hope I can help win games for the Red Rose and pass on some of the experience I’ve gained throughout my career over the years.”
“They have a strong team in Lancashire and Emirates. Old Trafford is a really great venue to play cricket so I'm looking forward to it. It will also be great to meet Jimmy Anderson.”
Lancashire are currently without a head coach following the departure of Glenn Chapple, but director of cricket performance Mark Chilton said Lyon would be "an important player" as the club looks to improve after a series of near misses they had seen wanted to achieve In recent years we have come second in all three district competitions.
Chilton said: “Nathan is an extremely skilled and experienced player and when we learned he was available for the duration of next summer, we jumped at the opportunity to add him to our squad for the 2024 season.”
“His bowling record in both international and domestic cricket speaks for itself and we believe he will be an important player for us with the ball as we look to achieve our goals in all competitions.”
“We have several young spin bowlers in our squad and for them to have the opportunity to learn from and play alongside someone with almost 500 Test match wickets will be invaluable to their development and I'm sure Nathan will play just as important a role off the pitch as he wants on it.
