Josh Tongue has been ruled out of England's white-ball tour of the Caribbean next month after sustaining an injury during England Lions' ongoing training camp in the United Arab Emirates.

Matthew Potts has been named as a replacement for Josh Tongue in the England men's squad for the upcoming ODI series against West Indies in the Caribbean.

The injury is a blow to the 26-year-old Tongue, who impressed in his two Test appearances at Lord's in the home summer of 2023 and had been expected to make an all-format debut as England look to rebuild their fortunes after a disappointing 2020 World Cup campaign against India.

With his ability to produce a nasty bounce at speeds of around 90mph, Tongue's value to the England team was confirmed last month when he was handed a lucrative two-year contract with the ECB.

Injury permitting, Tongue's next chance of England honors could come on the five-Test tour of India starting in January. “I think my pace will be helpful in sub-continental conditions and I can also turn the ball over and my rebounding tactics, which Ben Stokes obviously likes, will benefit the team,” he said ahead of the Lions trip.

For Potts, the late call-up is a chance to build on his brief taste of England's white-ball action, having been selected for a one-off ODI debut against South Africa in 2022 and two further appearances against Ireland just before the World Cup, one of which was washed out.

Like Tongue, Potts also received a two-year contract with the ECB for 2023-24 after impressing with his work ethic in his first summer of testing in 2022. That year he took 20 wickets in five appearances at 28.00, before another one-off appearance against Ireland at Lord's in June.
