Sri Lanka's primary T20 cricket competition, the Lanka primary League (LPL), is expected to develop significantly in the coming 2025 season. There are rumors circulating that preparations are being made to add a sixth franchise to the league.
Top international players like David Miller and Kane Williamson are reportedly expected to sign with the new team.
The LPL 2024 season came to an intense conclusion in Colombo earlier this month, with Galle Marvels and eventual victors Jaffna Kings facing off in the final match. In attendance at the final match were almost a hundred members of the ICC board, including Greg Barclay, the chairman. Initially, the ICC officials traveled to Sri Lanka in order to attend the ICC AGM. The LPL 2024 trophy was also given by Greg Barclay alongside Sri Lanka's Sports Minister Harin Fernando to Jaffna Kings, the fourth-time winners, at the post-final presentation ceremony. Charith Asalanka received the trophy from them.
Sri Lankan cricket talent has been identified and developed in large part thanks to the LPL. The event, which began during the epidemic, has produced talents like Maheesh Theekshana and Pathum Nissanka, who have both established themselves as essential members of Sri Lanka's national squad in limited-overs forms.
