England pacer Jofra Archer has been ruled out of the upcoming white-ball tour against the West Indies next month. The fast bowler felt pain in his elbow while training with the team during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2023.

England pacer Jofra Archer continues to await recovery from an elbow injury as he suffered a setback during rehabilitation in the form of pain during training. As a result, he was left out of the Jos Buttler-led white-ball side for the upcoming Caribbean tour.

Archer's problems began during the IPL when he suffered another stress fracture in his elbow while playing for Mumbai Indians. Despite a determined comeback in January, where he took part in ODIs and T20Is against South Africa and Bangladesh, he was unable to fully recover from the injury.

England had originally hoped to include Archer in their World Cup squad and expected him to return to fitness in the second half of the group stage. However, medical reports from the England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) advised a more cautious approach and designated him as a reserve player.

“He comes as a reserve... he continues to build and rehabilitate,” Jos Buttler was quoted as saying when Archer joined the World Cup squad in Mumbai. However, after a few light training sessions, Archer returned home and dealt a blow to England's pace resources.

Speaking about the decision not to use Archer during the World Cup and his absence from the white-ball squad, England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) chief executive Rob Key said:

“You don’t want to take the risk of rushing into something and seeing this crap for the rest of your career. So then we said, 'Okay, fine, that's not the right way. Instead of just letting him hang around and not really.' If we do something, we'll send him back home and get Brydon Carse, who has been preparing to come back.

Until he is ready and fit, he will not be in the squad - and even then he will need a period of training. It will not be easy and we have to be careful,” he added.

Archer endured a lengthy 18-month absence due to injury in 2021 and made his international comeback during the tour of South Africa and Bangladesh in early 2023 - his final appearances for England.
