Marnus Labuschagne's reign as the world's top Test batsman is over as England's Joe Root has replaced the Australian at the top of the latest ICC men's Test batsman rankings.

Joe Root's 30th Test century and a 46th second inning in the first Ashes Test has earned him the world's top Test batsman crown in the latest ICC rankings update. Marnus Labuschagne, who was the top placed batsman before the Ashes began, fell two places to third after scoring 0 and 13 at Edgbaston.

Labuschagne took over as the world's top batsman in men's Test cricket in December last year and held the position for just over six months. However, he has not been at his best with the pasture in recent months. Root is now in great shape.

At the recently completed Ashes 2023 first Test at Edgbaston, Root scored his 30th hundred in red ball cricky for England, beating Sir Don Bradman's tally of 29 Test tons. Root continued his unbeaten 118 in the first inning to 46 in the second. However, the effort fell through as Australia won the Test by two wickets.

Labuschagne, on the other hand, missed both innings and slipped to third place with scores of 0 and 13. Veteran New Zealand batsman Kane Williamson (883) is up two spots to second.

Among the other batters present at the first Ashes Test, Travis Head (873) moved up one position to fourth place, while Steve Smith (861) fell four places to sixth place.

Australia opener Usman Khawaja was named Player of the Match for his heroics against England and the 36-year-old set a new career high and seventh overall, while youngster Harry Brook also earned the best mark of his short Test career by finishing in the latest Test Ranking up five places to 13th place.

Meanwhile, Pakistani all-format captain Babar Azam retained his fifth-place finish in the updated ICC Test Batting Rankings.

The new bowler rankings didn't show nearly as many changes, with India's Ravichandran Ashwin defending his lead at the top ahead of England's James Anderson, South Africa's Kagiso Rabada and Australia's Pat Cummins.
