Former Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar has speculated that Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) may look to bring back Shreyas Iyer at the IPL 2025 auction. Iyer, who led KKR to their IPL 2024 title victory, was unexpectedly released before the auction due to what many believe was a disagreement over his salary demands.
Despite the surprising decision, Gavaskar believes KKR could still aim to reacquire their championship-winning captain.

Shreyas Iyer, who joined KKR in 2022 as captain, was unable to participate in the IPL 2023 season due to a back injury. His release left fans shocked, especially after he guided the team to their IPL title this year. Gavaskar, speaking on the Star Sports show Game Plan, explained that the disagreement over Iyer's retention likely boiled down to financial terms.
“When KKR won last year (IPL 2024), Shreyas Iyer was the captain. As I said earlier for Rishabh Pant as well, at times, there could be a disagreement on the fees," Gavaskar commented. "However, I also feel once Shreyas Iyer comes into the auction, KKR might also bid for his services. If KKR don't bid, I feel Delhi will do that."
Shreyas Iyer isn’t the only high-profile captain released ahead of the IPL 2025 auction. Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul were also released by their respective teams, adding further intrigue to the auction. Gavaskar mentioned that Delhi Capitals could use the Right to Match (RTM) card to bring Pant back into their side.
"Delhi will want him because they will also need to find a captain if Rishabh Pant isn't in their team. So I feel Delhi will definitely try to use the RTM card or bring Rishabh Pant back into their team at the auction," Gavaskar said
