David Warner's surprising exclusion from the IPL 2025 auction has become a major talking point in cricket circles. The Australian opener, known for his remarkable performances in the Indian Premier League (IPL), went unsold during the auction held in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. This unexpected outcome shocked fans and pundits alike, especially considering Warner's consistent success over the years.

With a base price of INR 2 crore, Warner, one of IPL's greatest-ever players, failed to attract any bids. Many were left wondering why such an experienced and successful player was overlooked.

Cricket commentator Aakash Chopra weighed in on Warner’s unsold status, suggesting that non-cricketing reasons might have played a role. He pointed out that other veteran players, like Faf du Plessis, were bought during the auction. Du Plessis, who is older than Warner, was signed by the Delhi Capitals for his base price of INR 2 crore.

"Some people were not sold, and some of them were statements, that they won't take David Warner. You were getting David Warner for INR 2 crore. He is IPL's GOAT, his Aadhar card is already made, dances to South Indian songs, and loves India a lot but no one bought him. It can't be because of cricket. Faf du Plessis was sold. If Faf can be sold, why not David Warner?" Chopra said on his YouTube channel.

He noted that two Australian coaches, Ricky Ponting and Justin Langer, were part of the auction process but chose not to bid on Warner.

Chopra believes Warner’s exclusion wasn’t purely based on his performance. While Warner’s run tally in the previous IPL season was below expectations, Chopra argued that many players experience a dip in form but still get bought.

"He scored fewer runs last year but that happens with a lot of people. Devdutt Padikkal also scored fewer runs, but he was bought again by RCB for two crores. If you are a decent player and a season goes bad, people are okay with it," Chopra said.

He hinted that off-field issues might have influenced franchises’ decisions, drawing a comparison with Prithvi Shaw, who has also faced challenges beyond cricket.

"However, if you are unable to manage your off-field issues, there is a line in the sand, and it is there for Prithvi Shaw as well," Chopra concluded
