Australia is grappling with injury concerns just days before the second Test against India, scheduled to start on December 6, 2024, at Adelaide Oval. Star batter Steve Smith sustained a blow to his right hand during a net session on Tuesday, raising fears about his availability. This comes on the heels of pacer Josh Hazlewood being ruled out of the match due to a side strain.

Smith’s injury scare occurred while facing throwdowns from teammate Marnus Labuschagne. The veteran batter was struck on his right thumb and appeared in visible discomfort. Smith removed his gloves and left the nets to receive medical attention before returning to practice, though his condition remains under observation.

The Australian team has already faced criticism for the recent performances of Smith and Labuschagne, with both underperforming in the first Test. Smith managed just 17 runs following a golden duck, while Labuschagne’s twin failures in Perth have raised questions about his form.

In addition to Smith’s scare, Labuschagne was also hit during the same practice session by a rising delivery from bowling coach Daniel Vettori. However, Labuschagne quickly recovered and resumed batting.

The Australian squad has seen several changes ahead of the second Test. While Hazlewood's absence due to a side strain is a significant blow, all-rounder Mitchell Marsh has declared himself fit.
