A report on ESPNcricinfo has revealed the matter that ICC would like increasing the number of participating teams in championships. The plan includes having 20 teams men's T20 World Cup as well as 14 teams in ODI World Cup. That could see four groups of five teams in the T20 format.
In the last decade, ICC had reduced participating teams in ODI World Cups from 16 in 2007 to 14 in 2011 and 2019, and then just a mere 10 in 2019. The T20 World Cups have had 16 teams but eight teams including some Test-playing nations needed to play group stage with Associate nations.
The existing formats will continue till 2023 before ICC sets up new FTP (Future Tours Progamme).
Earlier this year, the ICC announced increase in participating teams in Women's ODI and T20I World Cups as well as the championships.
