England fast bowler Gus Atkinson has been rested for the upcoming One-Day International (ODI) series against Australia due to a quad injury sustained during the final Test against Sri Lanka. The pacer, who has been a consistent feature for England in the ongoing summer Test matches, will sit out the five-match ODI series, with Nottinghamshire seamer Olly Stone named as his replacement.
Atkinson played a key role in England’s recent 2-1 Test series victory over Sri Lanka. However, concerns over his fitness have led to England’s decision to rest him ahead of a crucial series against Australia, which kicks off on September 19 at Trent Bridge. According to reports, while Atkinson’s rest is official, it is understood that he has not fully recovered from the injury, making him unfit for selection.
The 25-year-old speedster has represented England in nine ODIs, claiming 11 wickets at an average of 35.27. His last ODI appearance came against the West Indies in late 2023.
Meanwhile, Olly Stone has been called up as Atkinson’s replacement. The 30-year-old fast bowler was also a part of the recent Test series against Sri Lanka, where he impressed with seven wickets. Stone’s limited ODI experience includes eight matches, in which he has picked up eight wickets, making him a solid addition to England’s squad.
England’s ODI squad for the Australia series:
Jos Buttler (c), Jofra Archer, Jacob Bethell, Harry Brook, Brydon Carse, Ben Duckett, Josh Hull, Will Jacks, Matthew Potts, Adil Rashid, Phil Salt, Jamie Smith, Reece Topley, John Turner and Olly Stone
