For their forthcoming tour to Sri Lanka in early 2025, Australia's cricket selectors are considering a possible red-ball comeback for all-rounder Glenn Maxwell. Maxwell is under consideration for the two-match Test series, according to the Sydney Morning Herald.

Glenn Maxwell last appeared for Australia in Test cricket back in 2017. Since then, the dynamic player has been restricted to white-ball appearances. Cricket Australia recently unveiled the squad for the white-ball tour to the United Kingdom, with series against England and Scotland, but selectors have rested Maxwell and Mitchell Starc for parts of the UK tour. 

According to the Sydney Morning Herald, Australian selectors are considering bringing Maxwell back into the Test lineup for the upcoming tour of Sri Lanka, which is scheduled to take place in February 2025. He is in contention for the spin all-rounder's role in the Sri Lanka Test. 

George Bailey, the Australian selection chair, shared insights into the Sri Lanka tour's selection strategy.

“What we do know about Sri Lanka is that potentially the surfaces there do give you a bit of a different make-up of your Test side, so it doesn’t tend to look exactly the same as what the Test team over the Australian summer might look like," Bailey said.

“There’s a pretty clear plan in place in terms of what the test prep will look like and getting away and ensuring guys get some time in similar conditions or Sri Lankan conditions before the start of those two tests.”
