The England and Wales Cricket Board (ECB) announced the 16-member squad for the five-match Test series against India on Monday, December 11. The series, which will be part of the World Test Championship Cycle (2023-25), begins on January 25, with the first series scheduled to take place in Hyderabad. Captain Ben Stokes will be seen back on the field after the 2023 ODI World Cup after a successful knee surgery.
Fast bowler Gut Atkinson is one of them and was selected based on his performances in last year's county championship where he picked 20 wickets.
Apart from him, ECB has also included off-spinners Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir in the team. Both were part of the England Lions squad that trained in the United Arab Emirates last month. The ECB organized a camp for the players to prepare for the India series.
ECB also called Rehan Ahmed into the team. Apart from this, Ollie Pope and Jack Leach will also make a comeback after injuries in the Ashes. Ben Foakes was also added to the team after being left out of the team due to the presence of Jonny Bairstow.
The rest of the team has pretty well-known names. Joe Root, Zack Crawley, Ben Duckett, Harry Brook, Ollie Pope and Ben Stokes will be the specialists. Experienced pace bowler James Anderson will lead the bowling attack which includes the likes of Mark Wood, Ollie Robinson and others.
Meanwhile, the two teams will look to add crucial points to their World Test Championship standings during the five-match affair.
