Former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria has asked Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BCCI to help him lift the life ban imposed on him by the ECB.
The former lateral thinker was banned for life by the ECB in 2012 because of his involvement in spot-fixing activities. He was found guilty of spot-fixing along with Mervyn Westfield while playing for England's Essex against Durham in 2009. Denmark's Kaneria had encouraged Westfield to spot-fix and told him to concede 12 runs in an over.
A decade ago, the ECB handed the Pakistani spinner a lifetime ban after he was found guilty of two counts of spot-fixing. Alongside him, Mervyn Westfield, Kaneria's then Essex team-mate, was also handed a five-year ban after admitting a single offence.
The ECB's decision to ban Kaneria came after the board found evidence that he had convinced Westfield to accept money in return for deliberately scoring a certain number of runs in one during a game against Durham in 2009 Over had allowed. This act was deemed to threaten the integrity of the sport.
Although he needed a few years, Kaneria reported in 2018 and confessed to his commitment to the scandal and described him as "the greatest mistake in my life". The former cricket player is now looking for redemption and hopes that the Indian authorities can play a role on his journey into the cricket world.
