Australia has suffered a significant blow ahead of the highly anticipated Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, as all-rounder Cameron Green is likely to miss the first Test against India. Reports suggest that Green’s injury, initially considered minor, is more severe than expected, which could force him to sit out of the Perth Test, now called the West Test, set to begin on November 22, 2024.

According to The West Australian, the 25-year-old reported lower back pain following the third ODI against England last month and subsequently missed the remainder of the series. He was also ruled out of the first round of the Sheffield Shield, which began on October 8. Green underwent scans after returning from the white-ball tour of England, and the results suggest a more extended recovery period.

Currently, Green is with his team at the WACA in Perth but has not been included in the playing XI against Queensland. With his availability in doubt for the first Test, Australia faces the challenge of balancing their playing XI, especially with both Green and Mitchell Marsh not in top form.

If Green is unavailable, Australia might consider shifting Steve Smith back to his favored No. 4 position. Additionally, Aaron Hardie, a pace-bowling all-rounder with impressive first-class stats, could be included as a replacement.

Australia will also have to manage the bowling workload carefully, especially with Green's absence. While Mitchell Marsh is a viable option, he hasn’t been given any overs in the ongoing WA match, which raises concerns about his fitness for the Test series. This could place extra pressure on spinner Nathan Lyon and Australia’s three main pacers, as they may need to take on more responsibility during the series.
