Misbah held a total of three posts under the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB). As the PCB took the issue of conflict of interest seriously, it was certain that the former captain would have to resign. After all, Misbah's identity is now only the coach of Pakistan.
Islamabad United's performance under Misbah was also unsatisfactory. The team finished the league in fifth place last season. The two-time champions failed to advance to the playoffs for the first time. As a result, Misbah may have lost the post of head coach of Islamabad United even though the issue of conflict of interest was not on the forefront.
Misbah has been replaced by former South African cricketer Johan Botha as head coach of Islamabad United. The former all-rounder has worked in PSL before. He was the fielding coach of Islamabad United.
Regarding his appointment, Botha, said, “I am pleased to be back at Islamabad United, the franchise where I got my first taste of the Pakistan Super League at PSL 2. Since then, I have had different experiences at the PSL and a range of coaching stints at various tournaments around the world. I plan to bring all these experiences together and hopefully create another memorable PSL for Islamabad United.”
Ali Naqvi, the Owner of the Franchise, said, “Johan was part of our team back in 2017, and his subsequent success across the world in T20 leagues would not be a surprise to anyone who had seen him work back then. He provides a progressive understanding of T20 cricket that we pride ourselves on, and we are confident that he will do his utmost in achieving our shared goals.”
Last July, the PCB made some changes to their rules, emphasizing the issue of conflict of interest. Under the new rules, no one associated with the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) or the Pakistan Super League (PSL) can hold more than one position or responsibility in the board or the PSL. Misbah was the head coach of Pakistan as well as the chief selector of the Pakistan national team. He was also the head coach of Islamabad United in PSL.
