Bangladesh ended their 2024 Test campaign on a high note, defeating West Indies by 101 runs in Kingston on Tuesday (December 3) to draw the two-match series 1-1. The victory is Bangladesh’s first on Caribbean soil since 2009, ending a 15-year drought against the hosts.
The match saw significant contributions from both bat and ball, with standout performances from Jaker Ali, Taijul Islam, and Nahid Rana leading the charge.
In their second innings, Bangladesh posted 268, setting a daunting target of 287 for the West Indies. Jaker Ali, continuing his fine form, scored a commanding 91 off 106 balls, supported by Shadman Islam (46) and skipper Mehidy Hasan Miraz (42). Jaker’s knock, which included eight fours and five sixes, proved to be the backbone of Bangladesh’s innings.
Chasing 287, West Indies faltered early and never recovered, bowled out for 185 in 50 overs. Taijul Islam spearheaded the attack with figures of 5/50, dismantling the middle order with precision. He was ably supported by Taskin Ahmed and Hasan Mahmud, who picked up two wickets each. Nahid Rana sealed the win, dismissing Shamar Joseph with a perfect yorker to bowl out the hosts.
This win holds special significance for Bangladesh, as it marks their first Test victory against West Indies in the Caribbean since the 2009 Grenada Test. Moreover, this is their first win against West Indies in any format in six years, a testament to the team’s evolving strength in the longest format.
