The retirement of the pocket sized dynamo, David Warner has left the opening slot open and Australia's current best Test batter Steve Smith was tested at the top, partnering up with Usman Khawaja and averages only 28.50 in the opening position, with a top score of 92* against the West Indies at the Gabba.
Bulk of the runs of Steve Smith's career came at No. 4, where he averages 57.18 in 67 matches. Both Usman Khawaja and Marnus Labuschagne are not satisfied Smith being at the top, leaving his suitable position, whereas Smith himself is unsure about his position and says that he's happy anywhere according to his team's needs.
“I have no idea, there is conversations happening in the background,” Smith told reporters when asked about whether he is going to be Australia's opener for the series against India. “Usman I think said that he likes me down at No.4. I think Marnus has similar thoughts. We will wait and see. I am happy anywhere, I'll bat wherever for the team but we'll see what happens,” Smith said.
The Border-Gavasker series has been expanded to five Test matches from this season, what it was four matches before.
“It's great that we are able to play a five-match series against them. You can't really hide in a five-Test series like you probably can in a two-match series. If someone gets the wood on you, it can be hard coming back from that. It's going to be a wonderful series,” said Smith.
Smith also is hopeful to turn the tables for Australia in regaining the BGT. He will be vital for Australia's Border-Gavasker series as he has some tremendous records against team India, including he captained Australia the last time when they won a BGT back in 2014-2015.
“We are probably the two best teams in the world at the moment in Test cricket. We played the World Test Championship final last year and beat them there. They have been great out here the last couple of times, played some really good cricket. Hopefully we can turn the tables. It's been 10 years since we last won the Border-Gavaskar Trophy. We need to do that this year,” said Smith.
