Due to a fractured finger, England's opener Zak Crawley will not be playing in the Test series against Sri Lanka, which begins this month.

He injured his right little finger while trying to make a catch at second slip during last week's 3-0 series sweep victory over the West Indies at Edgbaston. In Crawley's absence, Dan Lawrence will open with Ben Duckett.

The team has added Jordan Cox, who is uncapped in all formats, as a backup hitter. Dillon Pennington has been replaced by Olly Stone, who suffered a hamstring injury during the Hundred.

At Edgbaston, Ben Stokes filled in for Ben Duckett as his opening partner, smashing a record-breaking half-century off just 24 balls; however, Lawrence will take over the job against Sri Lanka. He is not a specialist opener, having played the position seven times in his first-class career, including twice as a pinch hitter. However, he has batted in every position from No. 3 to No. 7 throughout his 11 Test matches.

Cox will serve as England's backup batter to begin the series. He had a great season, his first since joining Essex from his boyhood club Kent, which led to his call-up. After having surgery on his appendix, he recently returned to competitive cricket with the Oval Invincibles. He has struck three Championship hundreds for Essex, scoring 763 runs at 69.36. On the Pakistan tour, he will probably be their backup wicketkeeper.
