On Tuesday, Cricket South Africa (CSA) officially announced the squad for the upcoming historic one-off Test against England.
Cricket South Africa has announced the Proteas Women’s squad for their one-off Test against England, scheduled to begin later this week.
Laura Wolvaardt has been named captain of the Proteas team for this crucial match, which is scheduled to begin on December 15 at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.
The 15-man squad features a single change from the team currently playing in the ICC Women's Championship One-Day International Series: Tumi Sekhukhune replaces Ayabonga Khaka, who is not part of the Test team.
Test players also return to the squad: Lara Goodall, Ayanda Hlubi and Chloé Tryon are back after missing South Africa's last Test match against India earlier this year.
Stand-in wicketkeeper and batsman Mieke de Ridder is the only uncapped player in the squad for South Africa's first home Test since March 2002 and eighth against England.
"I'm excited. It will help the ladies a lot to understand their game and learn what is required in the longer version of the game. Getting the opportunity to play red ball is good for our cricket and I'm looking forward to what they can contribute," said head coach Mandla Mashimbyi. The metrics for me are very simple: it's about how much time you are willing to spend in the field as a batsman and how patient you are as a bowler. All these things we will discuss and if we see them bear fruit during the game, it will give us a big advantage," he added.
"We have reviewed the previous Test squad and made adjustments to give the team more balance," said Clinton du Preez, head of selection. "Lara adds versatility to the batting line-up as a left-hander, Hlubi adds variety as an effective seam bowler and Tumi has been consistent in her performances so far and has provided control of the bowling attack along with our other bowlers."
