Batting first the Blackcaps posted a strong 292/8 thanks to a stellar knock from Mitchell Hay. He remained unbeaten on 99 off 78 balls narrowly missing out on a maiden century. The young star built a crucial 77-run partnership with Muhammad Abbas ensuring the Black Caps set a challenging total.
Pakistan's chase never really took off. Their top order crumbled against New Zealand’s disciplined bowling attack. Ben Sears led the charge with a fiery spell of 5/59 ripping through the batting lineup. Despite late resistance from Faheem Ashraf (73 off 80) and Naseem Shah (51 off 44), Pakistan folded for 208 in 41.2 overs.
What They Said After the Match
Michael Bracewell NZ Captain: "The way we fought through the innings was great. We started well, but lost a few wickets and then they way Mitch batted was brilliant. We had a photo of the team before the game and we looked through how many matches they have played. It is a testament to the team, we just allow them to express themselves. There is no secret for what allows the new players to come in and perform straightaway. The domestic setup is amazing, allows us to express ourselves Internationally. It has been a great summer and we have played some great cricket. We don't want to sell ourselves short now and want to keep doing the simple things well, end on a high. (On Ben Sears) He's done exceptionally, he's put in a lot of work off the field to get himself ready. He's suffered a lot of injuries in his short career but glad to see him get the rewards for his hard work today"
Mohammad Rizwan PAK Captain: "(On his shoulder) It is sore but it part of the game. (On match) We didn't do well, we didn't utilise the swing and they bowled very well. Later on, Faheem and Naseem fought well for us. These are challenging conditions for us, but we can't make excuses. We are professional cricketers and we need to do something different. The bowlers of New Zealand were very disciplined, they bowled the hard lengths. In the last couple of months, we lost the key moments. Today, we didn't do well with the ball and bat in the first 10 overs. Credit to Mitch Hay as well, the way he batted was amazing. We don't know much about the pitch in Tauranga, we will go there and assess the conditions"
Mitchell Hay | Player of the Match: "Didn't cross my mind at all (century), I was just swinging. (On his partnership with Abbas) We just talked a lot about trying to take the game deep. We thought we could do a little bit of damage if we got to the death period. Mo batted really nicely. It was nice to form a partnership with him and take it deep. It's been cool to play these three games, definitely gives you confidence. Pretty happy with the keeping, the bowlers were awesome again tonight, it's a pleasure to keep to. They make the job pretty easy for me"
