Matthew Breetzke is fast becoming one of South Africa’s brightest cricket stars. The talented right-handed batsman from Port Elizabeth first caught the eye at just 14 years old when he was selected for Grey High’s first team. Since then his rise has been nothing short of impressive.

He made his first-class debut for Eastern Province in 2017 and soon earned a spot in South African squad for the 2018 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. Breetzke played a key role for Eastern Province during the 2018-19 season his breakthrough came in the 2022-23 CSA four-day competition where he scored three centuries and four fifties in just 14 innings finishing as the top run-scorer with an average of 60.58.
Known for his exquisite stroke play Matthew has shown great flexibility by batting both at the top and in the middle order proving himself to be a complete team player. He made his T20 debut against the Australia national cricket team in September 2023.
His talent has now reached international arena. During the IPL 2025 mega auction in Saudi Arabia Matthew secured a deal with the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for ₹57 lakh.
In a record-breaking moment during the Tri-Series in Pakistan debutant Breetzke flew in from South African national cricket team and smashed an incredible 150 off 148 deliveries against a strong New Zealand side. His innings featured five sixes and eleven boundaries setting a new record for the highest score on ODI debut. This feat broke Desmond Haynes’ 47-year-old record of 148 runs, as Breetzke helped lift South Africa to 304/6.
