West Indies captain Rovman Powell says after the big Uganda win that they’re improving match by match and they are now at 70-80%.

West Indies crushed Uganda by 134 runs on Sunday (June 9) in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 match at the Providence Stadium in Guyana. With the contribution from all the batters, West Indies scored 173 runs for 5 wickets in 20 overs.

In the chase, West Indies just dismantled the Uganda batters as they bundled out Uganda for 39 runs, which is joint lowest score in the ICC T20 World Cup history.

“We talk about improving 10-15% every match. Last game, we were flat so we just wanted to improve as a team. When you are playing at home, the pressure can sometimes get to you. So, a little bit of rust (in the first match). We started off at 60%, now up to 70-80% and from here, it gets tougher,” Powell said.

Uganda had no answer to spinner Akeal Hosein’s bowling as Akeal took a fifer and ended up the bowling figure with 4-0-11-5. Powell praises Akeal highly after the match. “He (Akeal) has been fantastic, that is why he is the No.3 ranked bowler in the world. He has done it against Full-Member nations as well, and we expect him to do it against teams that are just coming into international cricket,” Powell added.

However, Powell admits that the next challenges will be hard after playing Papua New Guinea and Uganda in the first two matches as they next two matches will be against New Zealand and Afghanistan. “It is just for us to continue to play good cricket. We have played good cricket for the last 12 months or so. It gets tougher from here but we understand conditions and cricket is not easy in the Caribbean. Since West Indies have come to Guyana, the support has been fantastic,” Powell concluded.
