India pacer Mohammed Shami showcased his all-round abilities as he led Bengal to a thrilling three-run victory over Chandigarh in the pre-quarterfinal of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy (SMAT) 2024-25. Shami’s vital contribution with the bat, scoring an unbeaten 32 off just 17 balls, helped Bengal post a competitive total of 159/9 at Bengaluru’s M. Chinnaswamy Stadium on December 9.
Bengal found themselves in deep trouble at 114/8 after the dismissal of Kanishk Seth. However, coming in at No. 10, Shami stepped up under pressure, smashing two sixes and a boundary in the final over bowled by Sandeep Sharma. His powerful knock lifted Bengal from the brink, turning the game in their favor.
Known for his ability to contribute valuable runs lower down the order, Shami’s knock was vital in a match where Bengal’s top and middle order struggled. His innings featured two magnificent square-cut sixes and a well-timed four, which helped Bengal reach 159/9 in their allotted 20 overs.
Shami’s unbeaten 32 became the third-highest score by a No. 10 batter in SMAT history, following Odisha’s Rajesh Mohanty (36 off 24) and Goa’s Deepraj Gaonkar (51* off 22).
In response, Chandigarh put up a tough fight but fell short by just three runs. Shami’s contribution proved to be the game-changer as Bengal’s total of 159 was just enough to secure their place in the quarter-finals of the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy.
