The breaking news is that hard-hitting batsman Tim David has been called up to Australia's ODI team for the upcoming five-game ODI series in South Africa for the first time.
Tim David, the right-handed Australian batsman, received his first ODI call against South Africa in the upcoming game in a five-game 50-over format which will help him make the final push to secure his place in the upcoming ODI squad to secure the 2023 World Cup.
David, who does not have an ODI cap, hit 64 of 28 balls in the first T20I in Durban on Wednesday. After the T20 series, he should join the Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL.
Cricket Australia (CA) has awarded Tim David his maiden ODI call-up for the five ODI matches against South Africa after an impressive performance in the shorter format of the game. Incidentally, the hard-hitting right-handed batsman has managed to play just 16 List A matches so far, scoring 745 runs at a staggering average of over 82 and a superb strike rate of over 123. He has also hit a total of 5 half-centuries and 2 hundreds in 50-overs cricket.
Australia will announce its final 15-man squad for the crucial ICC ODI World Cup 2023 next week and has until September 28 to make changes. Therefore, David will have a wonderful opportunity to secure the finisher's spot in the ODI team. Australia are already without key players Steve Smith, Glenn Maxwell, Pat Cummins and Mitchell Starc for the five-match ODI series against South Africa.
Australian selector Tony Dodemaide explained that David could provide the firepower at the end of an innings. The former was also excited to see how the 27-year-old adapts to the challenges that 50-over cricket brings.
“Tim is already here for the T20 series, which provides an opportunity to see how his game translates to the one-day format. He will give us an additional option in that power role at the end of an innings,” Dodemaide said as quoted.
The first ODI is scheduled to take place in Bloemfontein on September 7. However, before this encounter, Australia and South Africa will play two T20Is on September 1 and 3 respectively.
