Former India captain Aakash Chopra has criticized Rohit Sharma, the captain of the Mumbai Indians, for the shot he chose that got him out in the IPL 2023 match against the Punjab Kings on Wednesday (May 3).

After being assigned to bat first at Mohali, Punjab set up a massive 215-run target for Mumbai. With seven overs and six wickets remaining, the visitors successfully chased down the target. But Rohit failed to open his account, tying the record for most ducks by a batter in the tournament's history with Dinesh Karthik, Mandeep Singh, and Sunil Narine, who all have 15 ducks.

Chopra expressed her displeasure with Rohit Sharma's departure on the "AakashVani" show on JioCinema, discussing the Mumbai Indians' chase, “Rohit Sharma got out. I am still thinking if he is selling himself too short. I think he is. This shot is unbecoming of him - why? He was trying to jump out and hit in the first over and got out.”

In light of the upcoming World Test Championship final and 2023 ODI World Cup, Rohit Sharma's performance in the current IPL 2023 season is extremely concerning. In nine matches, the Mumbai captain has scored just 184 runs at a strike rate of 129.57.

However, the respected commentator lauded Yadav, Ishan Kishan, Tilak Varma, and Tim David for facilitating their team's pursuit of the target with relative ease, stating, "How well did Ishan Kishan bat and Suryakumar Yadav batted amazingly well with him. When both got out - Tim David with Tilak Varma. It was such a huge total but they won with seven balls to spare."

Yadav and Kishan (75 off 41) stitched together 116 runs for the third wicket after the Mumbai Indians were in a minor bind at 54/2. Then, Varma (26* off 10) and David (19* off 10) added 38 runs in 2.4 overs to carry their team to victory.
