England National Cricket Team Player Joe Root has officially shut down any talks of him stepping up as English next ODI captain. After Jos Buttler stepped down following England’s poor Champions Trophy 2025 campaign speculation arose about who would take over. But Root has made one thing clear he won’t be the one leading the team.

Speaking about the possibility of leading England’s white-ball side Root didn’t hesitate to rule himself out.

"I don't think so. I think that ship sailed. I think I've done my time as a captain in an English ship. But I'm sure whoever gets the opportunity to do it will be extremely proud and will do a brilliant job."

Root who previously captained England’s Test team for several years, is now fully focused on his role as a senior batter. With a packed schedule ahead including a home Test series against Indian National Cricket Team and the Ashes in Australia he believes his job is to contribute with the bat not as a leader.

England had a tough time in the Champions Trophy crashing out early in a disappointing campaign. Root admitted the team didn’t play to their full potential but remains optimistic about the talent in the squad.

"The talent and the ability within that group in terms of results was below some part. But like I said, there's so much talent and there's so much more to come from that team."

With Buttler stepping away from captaincy, England is now in search of a new leader. Root sees this as a fresh start for the team a chance to rebuild and regain their dominance in white-ball cricket.

"And there's going to be a new captain coming in. So it's sort of a new combination. I think it's a really good opportunity to reset and to move forward again as a group and get back to the heights that we know we're capable of and where we were in and around that 2015 to 2019 phase."
