It was meant to be just another day of domestic cricket in Bangladesh. Tamim Iqbal, the captain of the Mohammedan Sporting Club, led his team onto the field at BKSP and even did the toss. But in just a few hours, everyone in the cricket world was scared and hoping for his life.
Soon after going back to the dressing room, Tamim said he had terrible chest pain. As the pain got worse quickly, medical staff rushed him to KPJ Specialized Hospital in Savar. The first ECG tests showed problems, and doctors told him to stay under watch.
Even though the doctors told him not to, Tamim said he wanted to be sent to Dhaka. A plane was supposed to take him to the hospital, but Tamim had a major heart attack before he could get on board.
Mohammedan's trainer, Yakub Chowdhury Dalim, did CPR on him as he collapsed while an ambulance rushed him back to the hospital. Referee Debabrata Paul said that Tamim was unconscious and foam was coming out of his mouth, which means the attack was very dangerous. As soon as he got to KPJ Hospital, a DC shock was given to his heart to make it stable.
An angiogram was done quickly and showed that Tamim's left anterior descending (LAD) artery was completely blocked. This is known as the "Widowmaker" condition in the medical community. This kind of heart attack usually ends in death if it is not treated right away.
An emergency stenting operation was done by a team led by Dr. Moniruzzaman Maruf to open the blocked artery because time was of the essence. As of yet, Tamim's family members had not come, so match referee Debabrata Paul signed the form giving permission for the surgery.
After two very hard hours, Tamim finally woke up and could talk to his wife Ayesha Siddiqa and brother Nafees Iqbal, who had already made it to the hospital.
As word spread about Tamim's health, fear and worry spread through the cricket community. The 19th board meeting of the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) was called off right away because president Faruque Ahmed and several board members had to rush to the hospital.
The Mohammedan's game went on, but afterward, Mahmudullah Riyad, Mushfiqur Rahim, Mehidy Hasan Miraz, and Taijul Islam went to the hospital to see Tamim.
The hospital's medical head, Dr. Rajib Hasan, told the reporters that even though Tamim was stable, the next 48 hours were very important. He is going to stay under close watch in the hospital's critical care unit (CCU).
For now, the thoughts of a whole country and the cricket community around the world are with Tamim.
