After having a huge heart attack during a Dhaka Premier League (DPL) match, Bangladeshi cricket star Tamim Iqbal is getting better quickly.  An emergency angioplasty was done on the left-handed opener, and a stent was put into his heart to clear a clog.  Doctors at Evercare Hospital in Dhaka say he has been steadily getting better since then.

Tamim was first taken to KPJ Hospital in Savar, where he got CPR and DC shock treatment right away before having an angioplasty.  He was moved to Evercare Hospital in Dhaka on March 26 and has been closely watched since then.

On March 27, doctors at Evercare Hospital provided a positive update on his recovery. Speaking at a press conference, Dr. Arif Mahmud, Group Medical Director of Evercare Hospital, said, “Tamim is doing very well. He is eating, talking to everyone, and will be moved from the CCU (Coronary Care Unit) to a regular room today. We will keep him under observation for another day or two, and then he can go home.”

With fans anxiously waiting to know if Tamim can make a comeback, Dr. Shahabuddin Talukder, Senior Consultant in Cardiology at Evercare Hospital, addressed the issue, “We conducted an echocardiogram, and while there’s a slight decrease in heart movement, everything else looks good. He can lead a normal life. As for his cricket career, we will assess his condition after 3-4 months in consultation with a cardiac team and physiotherapists before making any decision.”

Dr. Talukder also emphasized the importance of lifestyle changes for Tamim, as heart attack survivors have a higher risk of recurrence. “Tamim will need strict monitoring, regular follow-ups, and significant changes in his lifestyle. His diet, discipline, and medication adherence will be crucial. His family, medical team, and Tamim himself must cooperate to ensure his well-being.”

Doctors also revealed that Tamim is struggling to come to terms with his heart attack. Dr. Arif Mahmud explained that at just 36 years old, Tamim never expected to face such a health scare, which has impacted him psychologically. “Tamim is finding it hard to accept what happened. It was completely unexpected for him. Many athletes have collapsed or even passed away on the field due to heart issues. To help him cope, we have appointed a psychologist who will provide counseling and guidance.”

Dr. Arif added that psychological counseling is essential in such cases, “At his age, having a heart attack is difficult to accept. But he must learn to adjust, and that’s why we have started counseling sessions. With time, he will recover both physically and mentally.”
