Indian middle-order batsman Suryakumar Yadav is expected to captain the team in the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia. Suryakumar Yadav will take over from the injured Hardik Pandya, who was initially expected to lead the team in the series.
According to a report, Indian batsman Suryakumar Yadav is expected to lead the Men in Blue in the upcoming five-match T20I series against Australia, starting on November 23 in Vizag and ending on December 3 in Bengaluru. This decision stems from Hardik Pandya's availability due to an injury he sustained during the ongoing ICC Men's Cricket World Cup. The high-level national selection committee of the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India) will soon announce the squad for the series.
The BCCI's high-level national selection committee is gearing up to select the squad for the upcoming T20 series. According to reports, Suryakumar Yadav, who served as vice-captain during India's tour of the West Indies, will lead the national team for the first time.
Hardik Pandya is still recovering from the ankle injury he sustained in the opening match of the World Cup against Bangladesh. The prominent Indian all-rounder was eventually ruled out of the main event and is expected to be out of action for at least two months.
Reports about Suryakumar's captaincy emerged as the Indian cricket board learned that Pandya is likely to need at least two months to complete the recovery process from the ankle injury. As a result, he could miss three T20Is and three ODIs against South Africa, with the need for surgery remaining unclear.
Suryakumar already has leadership experience, having captained the Mumbai team and the India U23 team in the Emerging Cup a few years ago. Known for his 360-degree style of play, he has quickly become one of the most impressive batsmen in the world in the shortest format of the game. However, his performance in the 50-over format has been subpar, scoring just 88 runs in six matches at an average of 17.60 and a strike rate of 114.28 in the ongoing event.
The selection committee plans to rest the majority of players involved in the ongoing World Cup. Notably, India will face Australia in the World Cup final on November 19 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad. Players like Ishan Kishan and Prasidh Krishna, who got limited game time in the main event, are expected to feature in the T20I series against Australia.
